We woke up very late this afternoon (yes, afternoon)! We were planning on visiting Zion National Park today on our way to Washington, Utah, but unfortunately we slept in so we basically just drove straight into Utah and made it to our host's house.
We met our hosts, Bud and Carol, and their son, Chris, when we arrived at their house. Though they had already eaten dinner, Bud said that they had a lot of food in the outside pantry and suggested that I pick something to eat. He wasn't exaggerating... they have a TON of food in their pantry!! As I decided which of the many varieties of soup to pick, I asked why they keep so much food. Bud explained that the church recommends that they keep about a year's worth of food on hand, and then I remembered: duh! We're in Utah! They're Mormons!
When we came back into the kitchen, I said out loud that they did have a lot of food in their pantry... and Josh laughed and said, "Why so much food? Are you preparing for the apocalypse or something?" I guess we should've discussed proper conversation topics before staying with Mormons, because it was super awkward when Bud repeated the same explanation that he had given me. Oops!
It must be torture for them to have so much food on hand because they are on a crazy 500 calories per day diet. It sounded pretty unhealthy to us but it is also an amazing accomplishment that they eat the same amount in a week that Josh eats in a day...
Bud and Carol are incredibly nice people and I wish that we had more time to spend with them. Their son, Chris, is also really interesting; he is in his 30's and lives in Poland with his Polish wife, but is living in Utah part-time to finish school.
Josh's high was the drive into Utah; we drove through some amazing landscapes, including the Virgin River Gorge! My high was how friendly Bud, Carol, and Chris were :) Josh's low was leaving Henderson sooo late, and my low was not feeling very well today. (Today was just not our day!) My "ho" was when Josh asked Bud if they were preparing for the apocalypse... awkward!
