I made eggs and oatmeal for breakfast and also prepared two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and two ham and cheese sandwiches for our lunch... we needed fuel for our first day of snowboarding!
Our host, Rachel, gave me a helmet and a pair of goggles to wear for today and tomorrow, so we were all set to hit the slopes! We dropped Rachel off at the bus stop since she was headed to South Lake and confirmed our plans to meet on Wednesday at 9 AM in South Lake to ski Sierra-at-Tahoe, then headed to Homewood Mountain Resort!
The mountains in the Tahoe area have a lot of college student deals, but since they don't start until Tuesday, Josh spent time looking online for a good deal on a full day lesson for me and we found one at Homewood, where there are seven lifts and 60 runs... enough to keep Josh occupied while I learn how to snowboard!
We arrived before the lifts even opened. I was so excited!
It was a full day lesson, and we spent most of the morning on the bunny slope but progressed to the t-bar before lunch. Josh grabbed the camera from the car and took a photo of me running to him to tell him how much fun I was having!
After lunch, Josh took the camera to the t-bar hill so I could show off what I learned. While everyone else might think that the the falling leaf and J turn (aka garlands) maneuvers are easy, I was super excited that I could actually ride down a "mountain!"
Of course, a lot of falling was involved, too.
Josh went down my green hill with me... I liked watching him! He looked great!
Josh took the camera to the highest chairlift and got some really neat photos. The mountain looks over Lake Tahoe; such a pretty view!
We stayed until the lifts closed, of course, and were sweaty and sore at the end of the day! I colored in a map of the trails at Homewood; the pink runs at the bottom are the ones I did, and the blue runs all over are the ones Josh did.
Tonight we're staying with the other Couch Surfing host who called us yesterday to say she could have us. We got to Lisa's house and instantly connected with her! She's a sports massage therapist in her 50's who moved out to Tahoe because she really enjoys cross country skiing... she lives in a really nice house in Truckee and is such a nice person. We're staying with her tonight and tomorrow!
Josh's high was being about to snowboard for the first time on our trip. My high was learning how to snowboard!! I went in with extremely low expectations so being able to do falling leaf down a tiny hill was amazing! I didn't have a low today, but Josh's low was that he forgot his bindings at Rachel's house, so he had to rent them today :( My "ho" was when Rachel asked us if we traveled... she's just a little spacey!
